The gallery is named after a complex book by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. It represents the "fractured" experience of exiled lives and the feeling of living in diaspora—like a comma placed in the wrong position in a sentence, leaving one feeling "forever afloat".
Dictée aims to be a community "epicenter" and part of an "art village" in the Bella Vista neighborhood. It is designed to encourage physical interaction, improve the neighborhood’s walkability, and provide a space where creativity—seen as a universal energy—can take many forms
The gallery is located at 2117 11th Avenue in Oakland's Bella Vista neighborhood, conveniently situated next to Xochi the Dog Cafe and the New Village Oakland community center.
